ChemQuest's 16-character cast splits 12 element-archetypes + 4 bond-type archetypes — element personalities embody their atomic behavior; bond-type characters are abstract energy-shapes (not faces) embodying the connection pattern. Per `chemquest-app/Docs/HANDOFF_FROM_LABSMITH_DISTRIBUTED_NARRATIVE_RETROFIT.md` (Wave 3, shipped 2026-05-21 — site backfill 2026-05-22 Wave 32a). Mentor Beaker stays the AI tutor; cast appears via static catchphrases + 5-pose ForgeIllustrations bundles. Strict cast-pacing discipline: max 2 new characters per kit; bond-type characters introduced after their atom relatives are familiar; 16-character cast acceptable ONLY because bond-types are visually distinct (forces, not atoms) — fall back to 12 elements if D7/D30 retention probes show recall lift drops at this cast size.
