Chapter 2 — Tag and the Math Inside the Price
Tag, a small raccoon-tween, moved with a quiet purpose through his workshop. His warm-grey fur, soft and thick, rippled slightly under a chunky shopkeeper’s vest. A short, ringed tail twitched as he paused, examining a row of colorful glass marbles. On his hip, a small price-tag-calculator hung alongside a neat roll of receipt paper. These were his tools, always ready.
He picked up a particularly sparkly blue marble. “Every price has math inside,” he murmured, almost to himself. “Let me show you the math.”
Most people, Tag knew, only saw the final number on a tag. They missed the layers, the hidden structure underneath. But for Tag, the price wasn’t a mystery. It was a story, built piece by piece. He taught the primitive of percentage + markup. This was the core math behind how stores set their prices. It showed how a simple item became a retail price on a shelf. Understanding this structure let you see why prices were what they were. It also showed when they might change.
Tag believed in making this math transparent. He wanted everyone to decode the percentages hiding behind every label.
He held up the blue marble. “Imagine a store buys this marble,” he began, his voice clear and earnest. “They get it from a supplier for, say, one dollar. That’s the wholesale cost.” He tapped the marble. “But they can’t sell it for just one dollar. They need to cover their own expenses. They also need to make a little profit to keep the shop running.”
He clicked on his calculator. “So, they add a markup.” He looked up, his bright eyes intent. “Markup is a percentage added to the cost. Let’s say they add fifty percent. That’s half of the dollar. So, fifty cents.” He typed: “1.00 + 0.50 = 1.50.” The number glowed on the tiny screen. “Now the marble costs them one dollar and fifty cents.”
“But wait,” he added, a small, knowing smile playing on his lips. “There’s one more layer. Sales tax.” He tapped the marble again. “Most places add a local sales tax. Let’s imagine it’s eight percent. That’s eight cents for every dollar.” He typed again: “1.50 × 0.08 = 0.12 (rounded). So, one dollar and fifty cents plus twelve cents tax.” The calculator showed: “1.50 + 0.12 = 1.62.”
Tag held up the marble, then pointed to the calculator’s display. “That’s how the one dollar and sixty-two cent price-tag was built. Now you can read it.” He looked pleased. “The tag isn’t magic. It’s just math.”
Tag taught that a percentage simply meant ‘per hundred.’ He explained it like this: “Fifty percent? That’s fifty out of a hundred, or half. Twenty-five percent is a quarter. Eight percent is eight out of a hundred, written as 0.08.” He made it sound simple, a basic building block.
He moved on to markup. “A store buys something for a certain cost,” he explained. “Then they add a percentage on top. That’s the markup. It covers their rent, their lights, their wages. It helps them earn enough to operate.” He scribbled on a small notepad, showing: Cost + (Cost × Markup Percentage) = Price Before Tax.
Then came discounts and sales. “When something is ‘ten percent off’,” Tag said, “it means you take ten percent of the original price, and subtract it. Ten percent of twenty dollars is two dollars. So, the sale price is eighteen dollars.” He demonstrated this quickly on his calculator, the numbers flashing.
Sales tax was next. “This is money added at the checkout,” Tag clarified. “It goes to the local government. It changes depending on where you are. And remember, tax is always calculated on the price after the markup, but before you pay.”
Finally, tips. “For services, like at a restaurant,” he said, “you might add a tip. Fifteen to twenty percent is common. It’s voluntary, but knowing how to figure it out is useful.”
Tag’s goal was always price-tag transparency. He wanted everyone to look at a price and instantly decode it. What was the underlying cost? How much was the markup? What about the tax? He called this his anti-price-mystery framing. Prices weren’t arbitrary numbers. They were built from math, and that math was always decodable.
Tag had grown up in the village shop row, a bustling street in MintForge. His family, a long line of raccoons, had been the village’s price-watchers for generations. Their nimble paws and sharp eyes were famous for tracking patterns. They taught everyone to “see the math inside the tag. The price isn’t magic; the price is math.” Tag had absorbed these lessons from birth. He carried them forward with a quiet pride.
When he turned twelve, Tag walked to MintForge’s central academy. Penny, a wise old badger and a respected mentor, had met him at the gates. “What is percentage and markup?” she had asked, her voice calm.
Tag hadn’t hesitated. “It’s the transparent math of how prices are built,” he replied, his small chest puffing slightly. “Every price has math inside.”
Penny had smiled. “You are appointed,” she said simply. And that was that.
Now, in his own workshop, Tag loved to demonstrate. He picked up a small, wooden carving of a squirrel. “Watch,” he said, his voice bright with enthusiasm. He tapped the carving. “Let’s say this squirrel carving has a wholesale cost of four dollars.” He typed ‘4.00’ into his calculator.
“The store wants a forty percent markup,” he continued, punching in the numbers. “So, the markup amount is four dollars multiplied by zero point four zero.” The calculator showed ‘1.60’. “That’s one dollar and sixty cents.”
“The price before tax then becomes four dollars plus one dollar sixty cents,” Tag explained. He added the numbers. The display read ‘5.60’. “Five dollars and sixty cents.”
“Then we add the sales tax,” he said. “Let’s use eight percent again. So, five dollars and sixty cents multiplied by zero point zero eight.” The calculator flashed ‘0.448’. “We round that up to forty-five cents.” He typed ‘0.45’.
“Finally,” Tag concluded, “the final price is five dollars and sixty cents plus forty-five cents tax.” He hit the equals button. The calculator proudly displayed ‘6.05’.
He carefully tore a strip from his receipt roll. He wrote “$6.05” on it, then held it up. “Six dollars and five cents,” he announced. “The math is decodable. The tag isn’t magic.” He looked directly at an imaginary student in the room. “I am Tag. The primitive I teach is percentage + markup. The move is: every price has math inside; decode the math.”
He was always gentle with new learners. “Don’t ever feel intimidated by prices,” he advised softly. “Every dollar has percentage-math behind it. It’s just waiting for you to uncover it.” He offered practical advice. “Practice mental math. Ten percent is easy – just move the decimal. Twenty percent is simply double that. Five percent is half of ten percent.” He smiled reassuringly. “Practice makes the math fast. It makes it second nature.”
He paused, then repeated his core belief, a quiet anthem. “Every price has math inside. Decode the math.”
