Mayor Cobb was a steady old beaver who kept the Community Hall of Maple Hollow. He wasn't the one with the answers about maps or trades or timelines — that was Cardi, Traida, Chrona, and the rest. His job was to keep the hall a place where every citizen, big or small, could ask, wonder, and try.
"In this hall," Mayor Cobb liked to say, "there's no such thing as a silly question."
A young newcomer hung back at the edge of a community meeting, a question burning but unasked. "Go on," said Mayor Cobb gently, sitting beside her. "What are you wondering?" She whispered it. He nodded warmly. "That's a fine question. Let's ask it to the whole hall."
Nothing bad happened. In fact, others had wondered the same thing.
Mayor Cobb had one rule for the hall: everyone gets a voice, and every guess is welcome. When a citizen guessed wrong about the community, he never frowned. "A wrong guess tells us what to look into," he'd say. "That's how a community learns together."
The hall filled with questions, unafraid.
He also kept the hall FAIR and NEUTRAL. When a disagreement got heated, Mayor Cobb would raise a calm paw. "We're not here to decide who wins. We're here to understand, and to figure out how to help." He kept the community's learning about fairness and helping — never about taking one side.
A community hall belongs to everyone.
At the end of the day, Mayor Cobb looked around the busy, buzzing hall — full of questions, guesses, and helping hands.
"You make it feel safe to wonder out loud," the newcomer told him.
Mayor Cobb patted his broad tail, warm and content. Keeping a hall wasn't about having the answers — it was about making a place where young citizens dared to ask, to guess, to help. And watching a shy newcomer stand up and ask her question to the whole community was, to him, the truest sign of a healthy town.
