Hands-on fraction tools

Three ways to build a fraction with your hands — pick the whole, model a real story, or take a fraction of a quantity.

Change the Whole Pick which Cuisenaire rod counts as "1" — then watch the same rod become a different fraction. The value depends on the whole. Story → Model → Answer Read a real-world story (pizza slices, marbles, a garden), shade a model that matches, and find the fraction. Fraction of a Quantity (Tape Diagram) Split a tape into equal parts and take some of them — the Singapore-math tape/strip model for finding a fraction of an amount (¾ of 20). Predict the Spot Guess where a fraction lands on a blank 0-to-1 line — then reveal the equal jumps and see how close your prediction was.
