Home (cultural context — an idea is born somewhere, for someone, with reasons) × Carry (cultural transmission — ideas travel between cultures and grow)
Zero began in India to make place-value work. What happened to it AFTER that — did it stay put, or travel?
Home then says: “An idea belongs to the one culture that invented it; once born, it doesn't really change as it moves.” — is that right?
Now they see it: "who invented it" is only chapter one — how it traveled and grew is the real history.
MathLore (counting — every people invented their own way to count) × Spire (pattern — patterns are everywhere once you slow down to see them)
Why can a handful of symbols (0–9) write ANY number, no matter how big?
MathLore then says: “Different cultures' counting systems are random choices with no pattern behind them.” — is that right?
Now they see it: every way of counting, from tally marks to base-60, is a pattern someone noticed and built on.
Spire (pattern — spotting what repeats) × Vouch (proof — show me WHY; if the why holds, we build on it)
Babylonians USED the a²+b²=c² relation for centuries; the Greeks are credited with PROVING it. What did the proof add?
Spire then says: “If a pattern holds in every example you've checked, that's already a proof — no separate step needed.” — is that right?
Now they see it: noticing a pattern and proving it are two different moves, and history turned on the second one.
Capstone — trace ZERO across the cultures that built it
The idea: ZERO — both a placeholder and a number. It wasn't invented once; it was built up across cultures. Each part below needs ONE cast member's lens. Bring in the right person for each.
How did early peoples write numbers before a symbol for "none of this place" existed?
Why did India develop a true symbol for zero — what need drove it?
What repeating structure does zero unlock, making huge numbers easy to write?
How did zero get from India to the Arab world to Europe?
How do we actually KNOW this history — what sources and evidence back it up?
The whole story, many hands — because you taught each idea and saw how they pass the thread to one another.
